Leg length discrepancy, pelvic tilt

Beinlängendifferenz, Beckenschiefstand

In the field of medicine, the term leg length discrepancy is used to describe the difference in length from the foot to the hips. Minor differences are not a cause for concern as most individuals exhibit slight asymptomatic discrepancies in leg length. Treatment should only be considered when the discrepancy reaches between 7-10 mm. Leg length discrepancies in children need to be monitored and may require treatment. However, these often resolve as the child continues to grow. There are different types of leg length discrepancies: anatomical and functional, as well as congenital and acquired. • Anatomical leg length discrepancy: This is the "true" leg length discrepancy, resulting from differing lengths of the upper and/or lower leg, possibly due to fractures or an artificial hip joint. • Functional leg length discrepancy: This occurs due to misalignments in the joints and/or contractions of muscles, ligaments, tendons, and fascia, which pull the skeleton in a specific direction. A pelvic tilt is often a result of a leg length discrepancy. The pelvis stands higher on the side with the longer leg. Unnatural contractions of the muscles, ligaments, tendons, and fascia surrounding the pelvis can also cause a tilt. This pelvic tilt can lead to a scoliosis of varying severity (sideways curvature of the spine).
