Foot and leg prosthesis

Most scheduled limb amputations have to be performed due to peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD). The amputation is usually performed when extensive tissue necrosis is present, infected tissue with impending sepsis exists, or vascular surgical measures are exhausted or not considered. The second most common indication is diabetes mellitus. Amputations as a result of accident injuries are rare compared to the first two indications. Prosthesis wearers often suffer from pressure sores and chafing on the stump of the prosthesis. Furthermore, the change in gait often overloads the joints and soft tissues with muscles, tendons, and ligaments above, which can lead to pain after some time.
