Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis involves a breakdown of the bone structure. Bones are constantly renewed throughout life. This is a process in which the bones are continuously built up and broken down. For example, if a more stable bone is needed during growth or due to increased stress from sports or work, processes that build up the bone predominate. Osteoporosis usually occurs in old age. Menopause in women, lack of exercise, hormone-related diseases or certain medications can inhibit bone formation or promote bone loss. Osteoporosis is often detected relatively late. Often, a spontaneous bone fracture, which occurs without or with little force, leads to the recognition of the disease. The most common fractures occur in the hip, spine, and wrists.
