Stiffened ankle joint

Ankle fusion is a surgical or spontaneous blockage of the ankle joint. The stiffening leads to a significant restriction of the joint's mobility, which often not only overloads and misuses the ankle itself, but also the structures above it such as the knee, hip, and back. Surgical fusion (=arthrodesis) is often performed for pain due to arthritis. Natural stiffening (=ankylosis) often occurs due to inflammation or injuries around the ankle joint.
